Four Signs Your Heater Needs to be Replaced
Winter is fast approaching. Is your heater ready for the cold season? It’s not easy to have your heating system break down suddenly in the middle of the winter season. Make sure that your heating system is one hundred percent functional, efficient, and reliable throughout the frigid months. When necessary, it’s best to replace your heater with a new one when you notice something out of the blue.
How will you know if your heater needs replacement?
You Have Higher Utility Bills
An HVAC system working inefficiently results in higher utility bills. There are many reasons why your heating system loses its efficiency. It could be due to lack of maintenance or old age. So, if you notice that your gas or electric bills are fluctuating, it’s time to consider replacing your heater with a new one.
It is normal to have your heating system encounter repairs at a certain point in time. However, if the repairs are more frequent than they should be, and you must purchase new parts for your system several times, it is almost equivalent to the price of a brand-new unit. Instead of persistent replacement of your heating system’s parts, it’s best to buy yourself a new unit. Rest assured, you won’t encounter unnecessary breakdowns for a long time.
Your Burner Flame Is Yellow
Check the color of your burner’s flame. Is it blue or yellow? A bright blue flame is an indication of a good flame. However, if your gas burner emits yellow flame instead, it is a sign that your furnace is yielding a toxic gas called carbon monoxide. This gas is colorless and fatal. Therefore, it is important for you to know some of the signs that carbon monoxide is consistently released in your home. Some of the signs include:
- Rusting flue pipes, vent pipes, appliance jacks, and other pipe connections
- Excess moisture on cold surfaces, windows, or walls
- Soot streaks around your furnace
- Absence of upward draft in the chimney
- Either you and the rest of your family are experiencing flu-like symptoms
- Leaking water from the vents, pipes, or the chimney’s base
You Hear Strange Noises
Strange noises commonly occur among old heating systems. You’d hear sounds like popping, squealing, banging, or rattling. If you hear a squealing noise, it’s an indication that something’s wrong with your system’s motor bearings. If your furnace blower sounded like it’s always rattling or banging, there’s something wrong with the blower assembly or the motor is failing.
Make sure you don’t ignore any of the mentioned signs above as it will lead to further damages in the system if left unattended. Replacing your heater not only saves you cost, but it also saves you lives – the lives of your loved ones and your own life as well.
