3 Benefits of Outdoor Air

Here at TDI Air, we talk a lot about indoor air quality, which is certainly important. After all, Americans spend more than 90% of their time indoors, even in nice weather. While you already know the importance of indoor air quality -- changing your AC and furnace filters regularly is a must! -- what about the benefits to getting enough fresh outdoor air every day?

Get Outside and Play!

Clear out the lungs, get outside, and play. Summer's here and there's no better time to get out of the house and breathe fresh air for a new perspective. Check out these four benefits of fresh outdoor air:

  1. Boost Your Immune System

From home to school to work, we tend to get stuck indoors a lot. This puts you in close proximity to other people who can be harboring germs. We all know the importance of washing our hands, but that can only go so far when you're breathing in the same stale air as your co-workers. Take a brisk walk outside once or twice throughout the day, which can go a long way toward improving your immune system. Or, throw the ball to your kids, take a lap around the block or engage in a good old fashioned game of tag.

Did you know exercise increases natural killer cells which boosts immune function? When your immune system is stronger, you get sick less often. You'll feel more productive, get more done, and be inspired to do even more. Outdoor exposure, combined with healthy eating, can mean all the difference in your attitude.

  1. Healthier Kids

We all want the best for our kids, and for them to be healthy is at the top of the list. Prevention says kids spend seven hours or more in school and two hours less on outdoor activities than they did 20 years ago. On top of that, yearly family vacations have decreased by 30 percent in the past two decades as well. Humans -- especially little ones -- benefit greatly from being outdoors. In fact, the more time spent in green spaces, the lower kids' stress levels, the higher their success rate in school and the fewer ADHD symptoms they display. Sunlight spurs the skin to create Vitamin D, which helps combat cancer and depression.

  1. Improved Mood

Think back to that very first day of spring when you can't help but be outside all day, driving with the windows down. That's the power of fresh air, and we seem to forget that as the season wears on. You're not imagining that happy feeling you get from the sun, along with the scents in the air. These things have profound psychological and physical effects on our bodies, to be sure, but also our moods. Take lavender and jasmine flowers, for instance. These scents are shown to lower anxiety and elevate mood. What about that pungent smell of pine trees? That scent can lower your stress and increase feelings of relaxation. And who doesn't like the smell of freshly cut grass? That's because we are reminded of the  color green, which is linked with the growth of both the plants and animals that we need to eat, says Huffington Post.

So, what are you waiting for? Get outside and enjoy the fresh air. Just be sure your AC is working properly when you come back inside. A big part of that is never forgetting to stay on top of regular AC maintenance.
